LEX 121 Legal Research/Writing II Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers advanced topics in legal research and writing. Topics include more complex legal issues and assignments involving preparation of legal memos, briefs, and other documents and the advanced use of electronic research methods. Upon completion, students should be able to perform legal research and writing assignments using techniques covered in the course.
Pre-requisite(s): LEX 120. Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate the techniques used to find the law online using Westlaw.
- Analyze advanced legal concepts using case briefs.
- Advocate a legal position on behalf of a client to the court by creating memoranda of law.
- Demonstrate advanced legal writing skills by creating a memorandum of law on a Federal Constitutional issue.
- Create a memorandum of law through a cite-checking exercise in Bluebook citation format.
- Defend a client’s legal position through moot court oral argument.
