LEX 240 Family Law Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers laws governing domestic relations. Topics include marriage, separation, divorce, child custody, support, property division, adoption, domestic violence, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to interview clients, gather information, and draft documents related to family law.
Co-requisite(s): LEX 120 . Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Apply traditional family law concepts by submission of briefs of court opinions.
- Advocate a legal position in a family law issue on behalf of a client in a mock court setting.
- Defend a client’s legal position through oral argument in a courtroom environment with opposing counsel.
- Draft a standard separation agreement in compliance with existing North Carolina law and local rules of court.
- Draft a divorce complaint in compliance with existing North Carolina law and local rules of court.
- Apply the appropriate body of law in an assigned subject area through in class role play exercises.
