LEX 288 Elder Law

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course provides an overview of laws especially relevant to older persons. Topics include healthcare decision-making, living wills, powers of attorney, financial and estate planning, government benefits, housing issues, elder abuse, and ethical considerations. Upon completion, students should be able to assist an attorney in addressing legal issues pertinent to the elderly.

Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Identify government benefits available to a fictional client when given a fact pattern.
  2. Compose a living-will using a set of facts.
  3. Analyze ethical considerations for a fictional client when given a fact situation.
  4. Demonstrate the proper method for reporting elder abuse using a role play.
  5. Evaluate the pros and cons to creating a durable power of attorney using role play
  6. Plan an estate strategy in a role play exercise.
