PHM 115 Pharmacy Calculations Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course provides an introduction to the metric, avoirdupois, and apothecary systems of measurement and the calculations used in pharmacy practice. Topics include ratio and proportion, dosage determinations, percentage preparations, reducing and enlarging formulas, dilution and concentration, aliquots, specific gravity and density, and flow rates. Upon completion, students should be able to correctly perform calculations required to properly prepare a medication order.
Pre-requisite(s): Enrollment in the Pharmacy Technology Program. Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Calculate problems involving fractions, decimals and rounding.
- Manipulate units from each system of measurement.
- Express dimensional analysis in conversions and dosage calculations.
- Calculate flow rate and dose per time on parenteral compounds.
- Calculate concentrations on compounded meds.
