PSY 241 Developmental Psychology Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course is a study of human growth and development. Emphasis is placed on major theories and perspectives as they relate to the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial aspects of development from conception to death. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of development across the life span.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Social/Behavioral Sciences.
Pre-requisite(s): PSY 150 . Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Apply Erik Erikson’s theory of psycho-social development to behavior, occurring throughout the life span.
- Evaluate the viability of Freud’s theory of psycho-sexual stages of development.
- Differentiate Piaget’s four - stage theory of cognitive development.
- Identify the “nature/nurture” controversy and its resolution.
- Explore physical, cognitive and social developmental influences at different stages.
- Analyze individual parenting styles and their effects on children.
- Summarize the different factors contributing to longevity.
