PTA 215 Therapeutic Exercise Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces basic concepts of strengthening, endurance, and flexibility exercise and balance, gait, and posture training. Emphasis is placed on applying techniques to the treatment of orthopedic conditions. Upon completion, students should be able to safely and effectively execute basic exercise programs and balance, gait, and posture training.
Pre-requisite(s): PTA 110 , PTA 125 , and PTA 135 . Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify the role of the physical therapist assistant in orthopedics on written exams.
- Identify the responses of tissues of the body to injury, repair, and aging on written exams.
- Explain the major principles of range of motion exercises, flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises, aerobic exercises, balance/coordination exercises and peripheral joint mobilizations on written exams.
- Describe the major principles of orthopedic pharmacology on written exams.
- Explain the management of patients/clients with pediatric, athletic, repetitive stress, and geriatric orthopedic conditions on written exams.
- Perform safe and effective range of motion exercises, flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises, aerobic exercises, and balance/coordination exercises on skills tests.
- Perform safe and effective data collection and interventions on practical exams.
- Apply readings from professional literature to the practice of physical therapy during a student presentation.
- Demonstrate professional skills for all aspects of the course.
