MAC 118 Machine Shop Basic Lecture: 1 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2 This course will introduce the fundamentals of measuring tools, tolerances and the basic set-up and operations of drill presses, lathes, and milling machines. Emphasis is placed on manufacturing standards and procedures used in welding, automotive, and engineering environments. Upon completion, students should be able to use measuring tools, perform basic machine operations, and apply manufacturing standards.
Course is typically offered in Summer. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate safety in the machine shop by scoring 100% on the safety test and working safely on the shop floor including proper PPE use.
- Apply Level I machining skills to perform bandsaw operations to a tolerance of +/- 0.060”.
- Calculate spindle speeds and feed rates to +/- 15%.
- Apply Level I turning skills to turn part diameters to a tolerance of +/- 0.015”.
- Apply Level I turning skills to create a shoulder length to a tolerance of +/- 0.015”.
- Apply Level I machining skills to drill a full-diameter depth to a tolerance of +/- .015”.
- Apply Level I machining skills to calculate spindle speeds for drilling to +/- 15%
- Apply Level I machining skills to layout and center punch parts for drilling to a tolerance of +/- 0.15”.
- Apply Level I machining skills to calculate spindle speeds and feed rate to drill, mill, and ream to +/- 15%.
