Medlin Campus Center, Room 2401, ext. 50401

The office of Veterans and Military Assistance Programs assists veterans and students serving in the military. The office handles Veteran Affairs educational paperwork and certification for educational benefits through the VA.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers educational assistance to eligible individuals in the following programs:

  • Post-9/11 GI-Bill®/Chapter 33 - This benefit may provide up to 36 months of education benefits. The benefit pays the school’s in-state tuition and fees, and may pay the student a monthly housing allowance (MHA) and an annual book stipend. The Post-9/11 GI Bill® also offers some active duty service members the opportunity to transfer their GI Bill® to dependents.
  • Montgomery GI Bill® - This benefit encompasses both the Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB) Active Duty (Chapter 30) and the MGIB-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606). Under Chapter 30, Active Duty members contribute a $100 a month for 12 months and are entitled to receive a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation. Under Chapter 1606, reservists must be actively drilling and have a 6 year obligation in the Selected Reserve to be eligible.
  • Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) Chapter 35 - Dependents’ Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program can offer up to 36 months of education benefits.
  • Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Chapter 31 - This program assists veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs through education and training. Veterans should meet with a VR&E Counselor for a comprehensive evaluation to determine if they are entitled for services.
  • Tuition Assistance (TA) - Tuition Assistance may be provided to eligible Active Duty and Reserve members through their respective military units. Service members should consult with their units for availability and eligibility requirements.

To receive veterans’ benefits, students must complete an admissions file, follow their prescribed program plan in the catalog, and maintain satisfactory academic progress, attendance, and conduct.

If students receiving veterans’ benefits drop or withdraw from courses, they are required to report this change in hours to the GTCC Veterans/Military Assistance Programs Office. Students’ benefits will be reduced for the rest of the semester. VA students who stop attending class or participating in on-line classes may incur debt with GTCC for tuition and fees and with the VA for any stipends the student may have received.

Independent courses must be approved by the Veterans/Military Assistance Programs Coordinator prior to enrollment. The Department of Veterans Affairs will not pay for courses that are audited.

GTCC veterans and dependents of veterans receiving VA Educational Benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average (GPA) and complete 67% of the credit hours attempted. This will include all coursework, including coursework taken outside of the student’s current program of study. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 and/or completion rate falls below 67% will be placed on Veterans’ Education Benefits Warning. If the cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0 and/or completion rate remains below 67% after the second semester of study, the student will be placed on Veterans Education Benefits Suspension until the required minimum progress is achieved. The student may submit an appeal along with documents to the VA Office if they had mitigating circumstances which led to poor performance.  VA Students may return to using benefits once they regain satisfactory academic progress.
