Admission to Guided Entry Programs
Guilford Technical Community College is an open access institution; however, many of our programs have enrollment requirements for admission. Students applying to some Guided Entry programs are enrolled in the Associate of Arts Transfer Degree Program while they complete entry requirements to qualify for admission.
Associate in Arts (AA) - Transfer Degree
Program Code: A10100
The Associate in Arts (AA) degree is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution or pursue further academic study. Students complete a broad general curriculum that fulflls the requirements of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA).
Students who intend to apply to selective or limited admission programs at Guilford Technical Community College may declare a Guided Entry Preparation Area while completing prerequisite coursework. These preparation areas allow advisors to track student progress toward program admission requirements.
Important:
Guided Entry Preparation Areas are not separate from academic programs or credentials. Students remain enrolled in the Associate in Arts degree while preparing to apply to selective admission programs.
Students who do not apply to or qualify for admission within one year will remain enrolled in the Associate in Arts degree without a preparation designation.

Applying
Guided Entry Programs have a formal application process and limited seating. That is, the program accepts a specific and limited number of learners each selection cycle and you must apply to receive consideration for entry. Each program has different requirements that must be met before you can apply. A Guided Entry Advisor can help you determine which program is best suited for your skills and interest and they can then guide you through the pre-application process.
Please note, while you may be admitted to GTCC, you are not automatically admitted to your program of interest. There are specific additional deadlines you must meet to be eligible for application. Once they are met, you may submit a program application by the specified application deadline date. Please note that some programs are very competitive and meeting the minimum program admission requirements does not guarantee you a space in the program.
More information about guided entry programs is available at Guided Entry Programs.
Selection Process
Program applications are typically reviewed by a Selection Committee, comprised of program directors, faculty, and staff. The selection process varies by program and is explained in the individual program’s admission packet.
Some programs use a “ranking” system, where points are earned for items such as coursework completed and current certifications. Other programs select applicants based on the program application submission date and meeting program admission requirements.
Student Progression
Students in guided entry programs are cohort-based. This means that admitted students are expected to complete the curriculum as presented in the catalog and should expect to attend full-time.
Higher academic standards for course completion may apply in guided entry programs. Students are encouraged to carefully read the admission packet and/or consult a Guided Entry staff member to ensure they fully understand academic expectations for both prerequisite and program courses. Admitted students who are unable to maintain satisfactory academic progress may, through a process of review, be dismissed from a program.
Advanced Standing
Students who have partially completed similar programs at other institutions and are seeking advanced placement into guided entry programs should contact the program director to request admittance/transfer to the program. He or she will determine your eligibility to transfer into the program. In the event they are offered admission, the student will undergo a transcript evaluation to determine his or her advanced placement. If students are ineligible for transfer admission into a program, they may apply through the Guided Entry Programs office for selection to start the program from the beginning.
