Pre-Curriculum Education

The Pre-Curriculum Education division is the backbone of GTCC’s open-door admissions policy. Some students seek admission to curriculum programs and find themselves under-prepared. Pre-Curriculum education offers these students an opportunity to develop academic skills to enable them to enter their chosen program with an improved chance for success.

Nearly all students who apply to associate’s degree programs and those who apply to some one-year diploma programs have their skills evaluated in reading, writing, and mathematics. Applicants whose scores fall below the minimum required by curriculum programs or for entry-level courses in English, reading intensive courses, and mathematics are referred to pre-curriculum education for course work. Pre-Curriculum education courses may be taken prior to or with some curriculum courses, depending on guidelines of the chosen program of study.

Pre-Curriculum education courses also may be selected by students who wish to improve their basic academic skills. The courses are offered in reading, English grammar and composition, academic skills, and mathematics. These courses allow students to concentrate on their individual academic needs and gain confidence in their abilities.

Pre-Curriculum education courses in reading, writing, and mathematics are indicated with a zero as the first number in the course code. Students must complete specific pre-curriculum mathematics modules as required by their program of study. Students should consult with an advisor before registering for pre-curriculum math modules.
