ARC 250 Survey of Architecture

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the historical trends in architectural form. Topics include historical and current trends in architecture. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of significant historical and current architectural styles.

Pre-requisite(s): Grade of C or better in ENG 111 .
Course is typically offered in Spring (when offered).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Analyze in written form architecture and the built environment in relation to social, political and religious context; to be measured by examination.
  2. Compare in writing architectural styles and theories of different eras using suggested resources; to be measured by examination.
  3. Identify in writing vernacular architectural styles and building types using suggested resources; to be measured by examination and by required written report.
  4. Identify historical styles of architecture and their time sequence including historical and cultural significance using suggested resources; to be measured by examination.
  5. Identify in writing modern (pre-1960) and post-modern architects and their contributions to society; to be measured by examination.
  6. Analyze the influences of historical styles upon contemporary architecture; to be measured by examination.
  7. Develop a written comprehensive report on a selected topic; to be measured by provided rubric.
