MED 150 Laboratory Procedures I

Lecture: 3 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 5
This course provides instruction in basic lab techniques used by the medical assistant. Topics include lab safety, quality control, collecting and processing specimens, performing selective tests, phlebotomy, screening and follow-up of test results, and OSHA/CLIA regulations. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic lab tests/skills based on course topics.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program and BIO 163 .
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Perform the laboratory procedures required in a medical office at a level of 2 or higher according to the lab assessment checklist in the simulation lab.
  2. Achieve in the simulated lab an 80% or greater on the Final Practical Skill Evaluation. (limited to one attempt)
  3. Demonstrate the relationship between lab tests and common diseases and apply to all procedures on a comprehensive written final exam at a 75% or higher.
