MUS 271 Music History I

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course is the first of a two-semester, in-depth study of music history. Emphasis is placed on the history and literature of music from Antiquity through the Baroque Period. Upon completion, students should be able to trace important musical developments and demonstrate an understanding of the composers’ styles.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): MUS 122 .
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Analyze primary sources of the history of music from Ancient Greece through the Baroque Period.
  2. Contrast the later historical periods through aural recognition of representative works.
  3. Analyze representative works of the later historical periods.
  4. Prepare listening reports that show the effective understanding and application of listening fundamentals and vocabulary.
  5. Analyze music composed in different time periods.
  6. Identify stylistic characteristics of each time period.
