ARC 131 Building Codes

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers the methods of researching building codes for specific projects. Topics include residential and commercial building codes. Upon completion, students should be able to determine the code constraints governing construction projects. Pre-requisite(s): ARC 112  or CAR 111  

Course is typically offered in Spring (when offered).

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Perform preliminary building/construction code research.
  2. Design a functional building within the parameters of using commercial construction techniques, the North Carolina Commercial Building Code, and the American Disabilities Act (ADA).
  3. Draft commercial construction details according to the North Carolina Building Code.
  4. Solve drafting and design problems for steel and/or concrete wood construction.
  5. Describe the relationship between state building codes and municipal ordinances.
  6. Describe the role that the American Disabilities Act (ADA) plays in commercial design.
  7. Draft major structural components as applied to commercial construction design.
