COS 111 Cosmetology Concepts I

Lecture: 4 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course introduces basic cosmetology concepts. Topics include safety, first aid, sanitation, bacteriology, anatomy, diseases and disorders, hygiene, product knowledge, chemistry, ethics, manicures, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to safely and competently apply cosmetology concepts in the salon setting.

Co-requisite(s): COS 112  
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Discuss the basic personal fundamentals of Cosmetology.
  2. Explain infection control procedures as they pertain to Cosmetology.
  3. Describe the structure, disorders, and diseases of the hair and scalp.
  4. Explain basic chemistry and chemical safety as it pertains to Cosmetology.
  5. Describe hair service preparation.
  6. Outline basic haircutting techniques and procedures.
  7. Illustrate hairstyling.
  8. Define chemical texture services.
  9. Explain haircoloring, hair lightening, and special effects haircoloring.
