The Health Information Technology Curriculum is designed to provide individuals with the technical knowledge and skills to process, analyze, maintain, and report health information data in compliance with legal, accreditation, licensure and certification standards.

Course work includes diagnosis and procedure coding/classification systems, privacy and security strategies, health informatics, data analytics and use, revenue cycle management, regulatory compliance, and organizational leadership.

Graduates of this program are prepared to work in the specialized healthcare roles related to health information technology, electronic health records, HIPAA compliance, release of information, revenue cycle reimbursement, and medical billing and coding.  Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, health insurance organizations, outpatient clinics, physicians’ offices, hospice, and mental health facilities.

Upon successful completion of the Health Information Technology program, the graduate should be able to:

  • Apply policies, regulations, and standards to the management of health information.
  • Utilize classification systems and clinical vocabularies for the management of health information.
  • Adhere to official guidelines in the assignment of diagnostic and procedural coding.
  • Utilize health information management systems.
  • Communicate and collaborate as evidence of team building. 

 

The Health Information Management accreditor of Guilford Technical Community College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for Associates degree in Health Information Technology has been reaffirmed through 2029.
