A 10 10 0 E1

The two-year plan listed below is designed to meet the requirements for an Associate of Arts transfer degree from Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and prepare a student for obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in the English field at the following schools: North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T), Appalachian State University (ASU), University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), or University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW).

However, students from GTCC seeking a baccalaureate degree may also transfer to other institutions. These institutions may require different courses within the various areas of General Education. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university after GTCC should consult with the institution they will be attending, their faculty advisors, and/or the GTCC Student Success Center.

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be able to:

  • Use strategies to acquire new information related to the study of literature.
  • Analyze relevant issues presented in the analysis of literature.
  • Apply critical thinking in the analysis of literature.
  • Apply literary criticism to various texts.

Notes:

*Schools noted above have multiple English pathways in place (such as creative writing, professional writing, or education). A complete list of the degrees (with concentrations) should be consulted on the respective university’s website.

UNCG specifies that one of these history courses be taken as a degree requirement. UNCW encourages HIS 131  or HIS 132  specifically.

All universities require a foreign language. NC A&T suggests it be taken in the second year and requires one or two semesters (depending on concentration), while ASU and UNCG start it in the fall of freshman year and require four semesters. UNCW requires 3-6 hours of foreign language study.

3 UNCW requires PHI 215  or PHI 240  for all its English degrees. For other universities, a general UGETC HUM/FA will work.

NC A&T requires MAT 171 .

5 NC A&T specifies BIO 110 .

ASU and UNCG specify ENG 231  or ENG 232  and ENG 241  or ENG 242  both be taken. NC A&T requires all four classes.

ASU specifies HUM 160  be taken as a degree requirement for one of its concentrations. This is also a suggested course at UNCC.

NC A&T specifies ENG 273  be taken as a degree requirement for all but one of its English concentrations.

ASU specifies ENG 251 , ENG 252 , ENG 261  or ENG 262  be taken as a degree requirement. UNCG requires ENG 251  or ENG 252  for their education majors.  Good other required hours options include ART 115  or POL 120  (suggested at UNCW).  Another good option is ENG 131  or HUM 110  (required for certain concentrations at NC A&T).  ENG 125  works well and is required for certain concentrations in English at UNCC.  PED 110  is required at UNCW for all English degrees.
