PHM 118 Sterile Products Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course provides an introduction to intravenous admixture preparation and other sterile products, including total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy. Topics include aseptic techniques; facilities, equipment, and supplies utilized in admixture preparation; incompatibility and stability; laminar flow hoods; immunizations and irrigation solutions; and quality assurance. Upon completion, students should be able to describe and demonstrate the steps involved in preparation of intermittent and continuous infusions, total parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy.
Pre-requisite(s): PHM 110 and PHM 111 . Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
- Identify sterile products and equipment used to make them.
- Demonstrate the use of sterile technique.
- Prepare sterile compounds.
- Identify guidelines set forth by OSHA in regards to sterility and safety.
- Demonstrate the safety protocols used in the sterile environment.
- Perform point-of-care testing to assist pharmacist in assessing patient’s clinical status.
- Demonstrate administration of immunizations and other injectable medications.
