ASM 114 Aerostructures Composites

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces provides an overview of the manufacturing of non-metallic aerostructures including associated computer numerical control (CNC) machining. Emphasis is placed on composite materials technology, fiber and resin properties, lay-up and curing procedures, tooling concepts, process planning and materials. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of composite structure fabrication methods, materials, and application techniques.

Course is typically offered in Spring and Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate fundamental composite structure manufacturing and fabrication methods.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the composite structure materials used in composite structure manufacturing and fabrication.
  3. Identify common health and safety items in composite manufacturing.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of matrix systems used in composite manufacturing.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of reinforcement fibers used in composite manufacturing.
  6. Demonstrate resin to fiber ratio in composite wet layup technique.
  7. Demonstrate proper ply orientation during composite manufacturing.
