BUS 258 Compensation and Benefits

This course is designed to study the basic concepts of pay and its role in rewarding performance. Topics include wage and salary surveys, job analysis, job evaluation techniques, benefits, and pay-for-performance programs. Upon completion, students should be able to develop and manage a basic compensation system to attract, motivate and retain employees. This course is a unique concentration requirement of the Human Resources Management concentration in the Business Administration program and is restricted to students in that program.

Course is typically offered in Spring.
Course has transfer restrictions - 10 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Apply traditional and incentive pay systems that are effective in a company.
  2. Apply basic compensation laws to create a compensation system.
  3. Develop a benefits plan that meets basic legal requirements and the needs of the employer.
  4. Select an appropriate employment performance appraisal method.
  5. Construct pay ranges for the jobs that are in legal compliance and competitive in the market place.
  6. Recommend a benefit program suited for a company.
  7. Create an appropriate job description that is legally compliant and meets the needs of the employer.
