CJC 214 Victimology

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the study of victims. Emphasis is placed on roles/characteristics of victims, victim interaction with the criminal justice system and society, current victim assistance programs, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to discuss and identify victims, the uniqueness of victims’ roles, and current victim assistance programs.

Course is typically offered in Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Examine crime victimization levels in the U.S. by race, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic, and geographic factors.
  2. Compare the two primary data sources for measuring interaction between victims and offenders, explaining the major differences between the two.
  3. Evaluate the concepts of “victim facilitation”, “victim precipitation”, and “victim provocation”, citing examples of each.
  4. Analyze the problems victims face as a result of their criminal experience.
  5. Determine which of the various “victim restoration” efforts in use today would be appropriate in given scenarios.
  6. Summarize research of offense-specific information.
