CJC 221 Investigative Principles

Lecture: 3 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course introduces the theories and fundamentals of the investigative process. Topics include crime scene/incident processing, information gathering techniques, collection/preservation of evidence, preparation of appropriate reports, court presentations, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to identify, explain, and demonstrate the techniques of the investigative process, report preparation, and courtroom presentation.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Outline and define the types of evidence available to investigators and the role of the law in the criminal investigation process.
  2. Identify the appropriate steps in managing and protecting a crime scene while preserving appropriate documentation. (Securing the Scene; Measurements; Field notes; Collection of evidence; Narrative Report)
  3. Examine a recorded interview, properly record witness and victim statements, and determine the admissibility of confessions.
  4. Categorize the differences in common investigations: death; sex crimes; assaults; robbery; and burglary.
  5. Prepare a case for submission to court, including the presentation of evidence and reports (prosecution summaries).
