COM 120 Introduction to Interpersonal Communication

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the practices and principles of interpersonal communication in both dyadic and group settings. Emphasis is placed on the communication process, perception, listening, self-disclosure, speech apprehension, ethics, nonverbal communication, conflict, power, and dysfunctional communication relationships. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills, apply basic principles of group discussion, and manage conflict in interpersonal communication situations.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Communication.

Pre-requisite(s): DRE 097  or ENG 002  
Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Assess a communication transaction using major communication principles.
  2. Analyze components of self-concept and the perceptual process using self-evaluation methods.
  3. Examine effective and ineffective listening strategies using course materials and personal experience.
  4. Examine specific behaviors in effective verbal and emotional communication.
  5. Evaluate nonverbal communication in interpersonal situations.
  6. Illustrate the dynamics of relationships using relational developmental stages.
  7. Apply appropriate conflict resolution methods.
  8. Differentiate between proper and improper uses of power in communication transactions.
  9. Demonstrate cultural awareness when communicating with others in a transaction.
