COS 111 Cosmetology Concepts I

Lecture: 4 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course introduces basic cosmetology concepts. Topics include safety, first aid, sanitation, bacteriology, anatomy, diseases and disorders, hygiene, product knowledge, chemistry, ethics, manicures, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to safely and competently apply cosmetology concepts in the salon setting.

Co-requisite(s): COS 112.  
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Investigate career opportunities available to a licensed professional.
  2. Characterize profession image.
  3. Assess the client’s needs through the client consultation.
  4. Explain universal precautions as applies to the profession.
  5. Identify reference points on head form.
  6. Explain the reactions of chemical hair reformation.
  7. Characterize anatomy of the nail.
  8. Examine bacteriology.
