CTS 120 Hardware/Software Support Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers the basic hardware of a personal computer, including installation, operations and interactions with software. Topics include component identification, memory-system, peripheral installation and configuration, preventive maintenance, hardware diagnostics/repair, installation and optimization of system software, commercial programs, system configuration, and device-drivers. Upon completion, students should be able to select appropriate computer equipment and software, upgrade/maintain existing equipment and software, and troubleshoot/repair non-functioning personal computers.
Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring and Summer (when offered). Course has transfer restrictions - 10 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Configure computer system components.
- Demonstrate system troubleshooting concepts/techniques.
- Demonstrate a system repair in which one or more hardware components need replacement.
- Design a functioning computer system with the selected OS and peripherals by completing a PC design project and the final project.
- Complete an operating system installation as part of a lab assignment and the final project.
- Demonstrate how to build a computer system installation in a prepared report by the end of the semester.
