ENT 260 Songwriting/Publishing Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course provides instruction in writing commercial songs and in fundamentals of intellectual property and its value. Topics include song structures, lyric writing, melody writing, co-writing, demoing songs, performance rights organizations, and publishing. Upon completion, students should be able to write a song, identify the traits of good commercial songs, and describe different performing licenses.
Pre-requisite(s): MUS 121. Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify the history and function of songwriting in the commercial music marketplace.
- Develop a commercial approach to song craft utilizing various song structures.
- Explain music publishing, copyright exploitation, and licensing.
- Apply industry best practices for recording and pitching a song demo.
- Create a professional portfolio of original songs.
