FIP 152 Fire Protection Law

This course covers fire protection law as referenced in NFPA standard 1. Topics include legal terms, contracts, liability, review of case histories, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to discuss laws, codes, and ordinances as they relate to fire protection.

Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Verify the constitutional article and/or sections that pertain to any selected U.S. citizen right.
  2. Identify the types and sources of laws on a local, state and federal level.
  3. Outline the anatomy of a civil law suit.
  4. Classify the different types of fire departments according to their rights and responsibilities in the community.
  5. Characterize the possible impact of OSHA and NFPA on the fire service.
  6. Distinguish the different elements of criminal law and basic criminal law procedures.
  7. Summarize the elements of negligence as it affects the fire service and different immunities from liability available to the fire service.
  8. Critique contract law and employment issues.
  9. Characterize important aspects of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
