HET 119 Mechanical Transmissions

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the operating principles of mechanical medium and heavy duty truck transmissions. Topics include multiple counter shafts, power take-offs, sliding idler clutches, and friction clutches. Upon completion, students should be able to diagnose, inspect, and repair mechanical transmissions.

Pre-requisite(s): TRN 110
Course is typically offered in Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the student will be able to according to NATEF:

  1. Follow safety procedures/precautions regarding the use of power tools, presses, and lifting devices.
  2. Categorize types of gears used in truck transmissions.
  3. Interpret the language used to describe geartrains.
  4. Calculate gear pitch and ratio.
  5. Demonstrate the relationship between speed and torque from input to output in different gear arrangements.
  6. Categorize the major components in a typical transmission, including input and output shafts, main shaft and countershaftgears, and shift mechanisms.
  7. Outline the role of main and auxiliary gear sections in a typical twin countershaft transmission.
  8. Trace the powerflow from input to output in different speed positions.
  9. Categorize the roles of PTOs and transfer cases.
  10. Assemble after disassembly and inspection.
