HOR 160 Plant Materials I

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers identification, culture, characteristics, and use of plants in a sustainable landscape. Emphasis is placed on nomenclature, identification, growth requirements, cultural requirements, soil preferences, and landscape applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the proper selection and utilization of plant materials, including natives and invasive plants.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Identify at 85% accuracy and without references, 160 trees, shrubs, groundcovers, bulbs, ornamental grasses, turfgrass and houseplants in local gardens and the Greensboro plant id garden.
  2. Analyze plant characteristics and their use in landscape applications using the textbook and database.
  3. Demonstrate plant propagation methods and techniques in the horticulture lab using cuttings, soil mixtures, chemicals and industry tools.
