HSE 112 Group Process I

Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2
This course introduces interpersonal concepts and group dynamics. Emphasis is placed on self-awareness facilitated by experiential learning in small groups with analysis of personal experiences and the behavior of others. Upon completion, students should be able to show competence in identifying and explaining how people are influenced by their interactions in group settings.

Pre-requisite(s): HSE 110  and PSY 150.  
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Select strategies from accepted and appropriate models for group counseling.
  2. Demonstrate the actions necessary to start a group, including: determining group type, purpose, and establishing group goals.
  3. Explain the entry of new members and the transition of existing members.
  4. Demonstrate facilitation of mock group within the established ground rules, and precipitate movement toward group and individual goals by using methods consistent with group type.
  5. Explain the concepts of “process” and “content” and how to shift the focus of the group when such an intervention will help the group move toward its goals.
  6. Develop documentation of a client’s progress as a group note.
