HUM 122 Southern Culture

This course explores the major qualities that make the South a distinctive region. Topics include music, politics, literature, art, religion, race relations, and the role of social class in historical and contemporary contexts. Upon completion, students should be able to identify the characteristics that distinguish Southern culture.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts.

Pre-requisite(s): DRE 097  or ENG 002  
Co-requisite(s): DRE 098  or ENG 011  
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate all of the following outcomes to the standards identified on the course assessment rubrics.

  1. Relate the ideas and values of agrarianism, modernity, and progressivism to the South’s social, political, religious development.
  2. Analyze the similarity and differences in the values and practices of the South during its phases of development as well as against other regions of the U.S.
  3. Evaluate the impact of course ideas, trends, and values studies on your personal life using standard compositional techniques.
