MED 110 Orientation to Medical Assisting

This course covers the history of medicine and the role of the medical assistant in the health care setting. Emphasis is placed on professionalism, communication, attitude, behaviors, and duties in the medical environment. Upon completion, students should be able to project a positive attitude and promote the profession of medical assisting.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program.
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate professional behaviors appropriate for a Certified Medical Assistant within the classroom, lab and clinical setting using policies from the Medical Assisting Student Handbook in role playing, written exams and professionalism rubric.
  2. Justify the steps necessary to become a Certified Medical Assistant, maintain credentials through continuing education, and the importance of joining professional associations on written exams, research activities and discussions.
  3. Compare the role of a multi-skilled health care professional with other employees in a medical office setting on written exams and Internet research assignments.
