MED 114 Professional Interaction in Health Care

This course is designed to identify various patient behaviors encountered in the medical setting. Emphasis is placed on stressors related to illness, cultural influences, death and dying, and needs specific to patients. Upon completion, students should be able to utilize appropriate methods of verbal and nonverbal communication with empathy and impartiality.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission in the Medical Assisting program.
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the steps of responsibility in the communication process between the patient and healthcare provider on written examinations, group projects and oral presentations.
  2. Analyze potential communication barriers with patients from diverse cultures and a variety of (dis) abilities on written assignments, exams, group projects and oral presentations.
  3. Formulate written communication in the patient chart during role playing, simulations and written exams.
  4. Incorporate professional verbal/non-verbal communication with patients and coworkers in the health care setting during simulations, role playing, within the classroom and on written exams.
