MED 140 Exam Room Procedures I

Lecture: 3 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 5
This course provides instruction in clinical examining room procedures. Topics include asepsis, infection control, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, preparation and administration of medications, EKG, vital signs, and medical emergencies. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in exam room procedures.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program.
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Perform in the simulation lab the clinical procedures required in a medical office at a level of 2 or higher according to the lab assessment check list. Used in the simulation lab.
  2. Achieve in the simulated lab an 80% or greater on the Final Practical Skill Evaluation (limited to one attempt)
  3. Evaluate patient symptoms in relation to diseases and conditions to determine if /when patients need to see the MD through patient history assessment tool.
