MUS 111 Fundamentals of Music

This course is an introductory course for students with little or no music background. Emphasis is placed on music notation, rhythmic patterns, scales, key signatures, intervals, and chords. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the rudiments of music.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): DRE 098  or ENG 002  (P2 grade)
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Distinguish rhythms, by sight and sound, ranging from whole notes and rests to sixteenth notes and rests.
  2. Construct scales and chords using key signatures, intervals, and chord progressions.
  3. Notate short pieces of composition utilizing correct pitch and rhythmic symbols and chord progressions, at a success rate of 70% or better.
  4. Compose a complete composition, given specific guidelines using a grading rubric.
