MUS 210 History of Rock Music

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course is a survey of Rock music from the early 1950’s to the present. Emphasis is placed on musical groups, soloists, and styles related to the evolution of this idiom and on related historical and social events. Upon completion, students should be able to identify specific styles and to explain the influence of selected performers within their respective eras.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts.

Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Determine specific styles of rock music based on aural examples; at a success rate of 70% or better/10 or less errors.
  2. Characterize the distinguishing elements of each stylistic period in rock music without the use if textbooks or other references, by the end of the semester.
  3. Illustrate through musical examples, the repertoire covered in this course
  4. Evaluate the influence of selected performers and styles within and across the various rock music eras through an oral and written presentation.
