MUS 221 Music Theory III

Lecture: 3 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course is a continuation of MUS 122 . Emphasis is placed on altered and chromatic harmony, common practice era compositional techniques and forms, and continued studies in part-writing, ear-training, and sight-singing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the recognition and application of the above.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): C or better in MUS 122 .
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring (when offered).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Analyze music in terms of melody, harmony, counterpoint, texture, and form.
  2. Harmonize melodies in four parts using triads, seventh chords, chord inversions, secondary dominants, borrowed chords, modulation, and transposition.
  3. Demonstrate the characteristics of common and popular musical structure using cadences, musical phrasing, and binary and ternary forms.
  4. Define and use musical terms given in reading assignments and lectures.
  5. Demonstrate continued skills in ear-training and sight-singing.
