MUS 221 Music Theory III Lecture: 3 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course is a continuation of MUS 122 . Emphasis is placed on altered and chromatic harmony, common practice era compositional techniques and forms, and continued studies in part-writing, ear-training, and sight-singing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the recognition and application of the above.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
Pre-requisite(s): C or better in MUS 122 . Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring (when offered). Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Analyze music in terms of melody, harmony, counterpoint, texture, and form.
- Harmonize melodies in four parts using triads, seventh chords, chord inversions, secondary dominants, borrowed chords, modulation, and transposition.
- Demonstrate the characteristics of common and popular musical structure using cadences, musical phrasing, and binary and ternary forms.
- Define and use musical terms given in reading assignments and lectures.
- Demonstrate continued skills in ear-training and sight-singing.
