SUR 110 Introduction to Surgical Technology Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course provides a comprehensive study of peri-operative care, patient care concepts, and professional practice concepts within the profession of surgical technology. Topics include: introductory concepts, organizational structure and relationships, legal, ethical and moral issues, medical terminology, pharmacology, anesthesia, wound healing management concepts, and the technological sciences. Upon completion, students should be able to apply theoretical knowledge of the course topics to the practice of surgical technology.
Co-requisite(s): BIO 163 , MED 120 and SUR 111 . Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Describe the role of the surgical technologist in the surgical team and within the surgical environment.
- Discuss the role of the professional organization in supporting surgical technology.
- Utilize medical terminology specific to perioperative patient care concepts.
- Compare and contrast anesthesia medications and methods of administration.
- Identify methods of hemostasis utilized in perioperative care.
- Define the role of the surgical technologist in perioperative wound management.
- Apply technological science (electricity, information technology, and robotics) concepts in the practice of surgical technology.
- Analyze legal and ethical issues surrounding surgery and the role of the surgical technologist.
