MUS 161 Applied Music I

Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2


This course provides individual instruction in the skills and techniques of the particular instrument or voice. Emphasis is placed on techniques and styles and the exploration and study of appropriate literature. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the studied skills and repertoire through performance.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Keyboards

  1. Apply major, minor, blues, and pentatonic scales and their modes to bass lines.
  2. Perform accurately in time.
  3. Improve the timbre or sound quality of playing.
  4. Demonstrate enhanced tonality, and know what note to play when.
  5. Perform with own unique style.
  6. Demonstrate how to read treble clef, bass clef and play simple melodies on the grand staff.
  7. Demonstrate accidentals and play the black keys on the keyboard.
  8. Increase ability to read and play different notes simultaneously.
  9. Demonstrate and perform melodies with major and minor triads in right hand.
  10. Demonstrate voice leading triads.
  11. Demonstrate a lead sheet and play chords and bass with left hand.
  12. Add three-part chords to playing.
  13. Demonstrate altered 9ths, 13ths and Blues progressions.

Drums/Percussion

  1. Demonstrate basic time.
  2. Develop proper grip, playing area, and sound.
  3. Improve the balance and evenness between hands.
  4. Perform drum rudiments, including the double stroke roll, single stroke roll, paradiddle, double paradiddle, triple paradiddle, drag, drag paradiddle #1, flam, and flam accent.
  5. Develop basic snare drum reading skills.
  6. Interpret drum set charts.
  7. Improve your overall coordination, touch, and dynamics.
  8. Perform common groove patterns found in Rhythm & Blues, Pop-Rock, Funk, Rock, Jazz, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music.
  9. Perform patterns in various time signatures, including 4/4/, 2/4, 3/4, 12/8, 6/8, 9/8, and 5/4.

Guitar

  1. Perform major and chromatic scales in the keys of C, F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A in two octaves from the tonic (min. tempo of 60 beats per minute).
  2. Perform triad chords in the keys of C, F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A, starting from the root position across the fretboard in one octave.
  3. Perform triad arpeggios in the keys of C, F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A one octave from the root (min. tempo of 60 beats per minute).
  4. Perform four-part chords from the roots of C, F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A of Maj7, Min7, Dom7, Min7b5, Dom7sus4, 7#5, Dim7, Maj6, Min6, Min9, 9, 7b9, 7#9, 13-one form for each. Perform four-part arpeggios from the roots of C, F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A of Maj7, Min7, Dom7, Min7b5, Dom7sus4, 7#5, Dim7-one octave from root (min. tempo of 60 beats per minute).
  5. Read level-appropriate single note and chords with rhythm notation.
  6. Perform a piece that is approximately three minutes in length.
  7. Fingerpick complex arpeggio patterns for the right-hand.
  8. Perform exercises, scales, and melodies using multiple right-hand finger combinations.
  9. Perform a variety of solo works from the classical repertoire.
  10. Develop an extensive repertoire of techniques, including tremolo, rasgueado, harmonics, slurs, and percussion effects.

Vocals

  1. Sing with consistent, accurate intonation.
  2. Develop coordinated breath support to help stamina and increase control.
  3. Demonstrate a free-tone quality with minimum tension.
  4. Establish beneficial practice habits to help growth and development.
  5. Practice voice care techniques.
  6. Use simple melodic embellishment.
  7. Sing in harmony.

Bass
