HIT 114 Health Data Systems and Standards

Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers concepts and techniques for managing and maintaining all health record formats including electronic health records (EHR). Topics include structure and use of health information including data collection and analysis, data sources/sets, archival systems, as well as quality and integrity of healthcare data. Upon completion, students should be able to determine compliance of health record content and governance standards within the health organization.

Pre-requisite(s): HIT 110  and HIT 220  with a grade of C or better.
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the concept of the EHR and the terms related to it, including the Electronic Health Record, the Hybrid Health Record, and the current state of technological adoption in healthcare organizations.
  2. Analyze health records to ensure that documentation supports the patient’s diagnosis and procedures, reflects progress, clinical findings, and discharge status.
  3. Analyze documentation to make sure the health record supports the diagnosis, reflects the patient’s progress, the clinical findings, and patient discharge status.
  4. Examine organizational regulations and compliance standards through application of basic healthcare policies and procedures.
  5. Implement data collection strategies for documentation of accurate healthcare data.
  6. Verify timeliness, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness of data and data, sources for patient care management, billing reports, registries, and databases.
  7. Apply current laws, accreditation, licensure, and certification standards related to health information initiatives from national, state, local, and facility level.
  8. Implement data collection strategies for documentation of accurate healthcare data.
