HIT 122 Professional Practice Experience I

Lecture: 0 Lab: 0 Clinic: 3 Credits: 1
This course provides supervised and/or simulated health information technology clinical experience in healthcare settings. Emphasis is placed on practical application of HIM functions and core curriculum concepts. Upon completion, students should be able to apply health information theory to healthcare facility practices.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Explain the documentation guidelines and regulations to assure compliance with standard. (I.2)
  2. Apply current laws, accreditation, licensure and certification standards related to health information initiatives from national, state, local, and facility levels. (I.2)
  3. Identify the health information indexes and data dictionaries used within the department. (I.3)
  4. Apply confidentiality and security rules to assume departmental adherence to HIPAA and state regulations. (I.1, II.2)
  5. Use facility and departmental software to conduct daily functions in the HIM department. *III.2)
  6. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. (VI.1)
  7. Model and accept responsibility for behavior, actions, and judgments. (VI.1)
  8. Promote ethical standards of practice. (VI.7)
