HIT 210 Healthcare Statistics

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers maintenance, compilation, analysis, and presentation of healthcare statistics and research protocols and techniques. Topics include basic statistical principles, indices, databases, registries, vital statistics, descriptive statistics, research protocol monitoring, Institutional Review Board processes, and knowledge-based research techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to apply, interpret, and present healthcare statistics and utilize research techniques to gather and interpret healthcare data.

Pre-requisite(s): MAT 110 or MAT 143  
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Report data for clinical indices, databases, and registries used to meet specific organization needs such as medical research and diseases registries. (I.3).
  2. Use specialized databases to meet specific organizational needs. (III.2).
  3. Apply basic statistical terms and principles. (III.3).
  4. Calculate basic mathematical functions used in statistics. (III.3).
  5. Analyze data (using appropriate software) for quality management, utilization management, risk management, and other related studies. (III.I).
  6. Interpret healthcare statistics, including but not limited to occupancy, death, infection, consultation, etc. (III.3).
  7. Report basic descriptive, institutional, and healthcare vital statistics per state and national regulations. (III.4).
