HIT 214 Outpatient Procedure Coding/Reporting

This course covers application of coding and reporting standards as they apply to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) guidelines and principles. Emphasis is placed on application of the coding guidelines, in relation to anatomy and physiology, for ambulatory healthcare settings. Upon completion, students should be able to assign CPT/HCPCS procedural codes according to official guidelines and evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies.

Pre-requisite(s): HIT 211  with a grade of C or better.
Course is typically offered in Spring.

At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Domain I. Data Structure, Content and Information Governance

  1. Summarize the purpose and use of the CPT coding system. (I.2)
  2. Examine the relationship between patient documentation and accurate coding. (I.4).

Domain IV. Revenue Cycle Management

     3. Apply CPT coding guidelines to assign and sequence procedure codes for outpatient procedures and services.  (V.1)

     4. Apply HCPCS coding guidelines to assign and sequence procedure codes for outpatient procedures and services. (V.1).

     5. Adhere to coding requirements, billing, and reimbursement processes for outpatient procedures and services. (IV.2)

     6. Describe the importance of quality clinical data for correct code assignment. (IV.2)

Domain VI. Organizational Management & Leadership

     7. Assess ethical coding guidelines in the prevention of fraud and abuse. (VI.7).
