HEA 112 First Aid & CPR

This course introduces the basics of emergency first aid treatment. Topics include rescue breathing, CPR, first aid for choking and bleeding, and other first aid procedures. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in providing emergency care for the sick and injured until medical help can be obtained.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Describe how to prevent medical emergencies from occurring.
Identify the steps that need to be taken prior to delivering care during a medical emergency.
Differentiate normal functions of the human body to know when the body is not functioning properly.
Assess a victim during a medical emergency to determine what care is needed.
Demonstrate how to perform CPR on adult, child, and infant victims.
Demonstrate the use of an AED on adult, child and infant victims.
Demonstrate the management of breathing emergencies in adult, child, and infant victims.
Practice and manage soft tissue injuries and bleeding.
Distinguish and manage acute musculoskeletal injuries.
Evaluate and care for a variety of forms of sudden illness.
