MUS 125 Aural Skills I

This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals in aural skills. Emphasis is placed on the study of basic melodies, harmonies, and rhythms through sight singing and ear training. Upon completion, students should be able to identify diatonic intervals, scales, and chords and perform and dictate simple melodies and rhythmic patterns.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Actively engage ears, voices, and individual instruments to create quicker and more efficient methods of reading music and playing in tune.
Develop music rudiments in simple and compound meters.
Audiate, sing and dictate intervals by size and quality.
Audiate, sing and dictate tonic and dominate triads.
Dictate simple melodic patterns, including scalar patterns, and skips within tonic and dominate triads.
Synthesize simple Roman numeral analysis in conjunction with sight singing and harmonic dictation.
Demonstrate personal responsibility through regular attendance, timely assignment completion, and full participation in class.
