MAT 043 Quantitative Literacy Support

Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2
This course provides an opportunity to customize foundational math content specific to Quantitative Literacy. Topics include developing the academic habits, learning strategies, social skills, and growth mindset necessary to be successful in mathematics. Upon completion, students should be able to build a stronger foundation for success in Quantitative Literacy by obtaining skills through a variety of instructional strategies with emphasis placed on the most essential prerequisite knowledge.

Part of the RISE program.

Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer.
Course has transfer restrictions - Developmental credits from out of state are not accepted.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Develop the academic habits, learning strategies, and growth mindset necessary to be successful in mathematics.
  2. Master foundational skills to judge the reasonableness of results using estimation, logical process, and a proper understanding of quantity.
  3. Master foundational skills to utilize proportional reasoning to solve contextual problems and make conversions involving various units of measurement.
  4. Master foundational skills to identify, interpret, and compare linear and exponential rates of growth to make predictions and informed decision based on data and graphs.
  5. Master foundational skills to differentiate between simple and compound interest and analyze the long-term effects of saving, investing, and borrowing.
  6. Mastering foundational skills to describe, analyze, interpret statistical information such as graphs, tables, and summarize data to draw appropriate conclusions when presented with actual statistics studies.
  7. Master foundational skills to determine probabilities and expected values and use them to assess risk and make informed decisions.
  8. Master foundational skills to analyze civic and/or societal issues and critique decisions using relevant mathematics.
