ART 283 Ceramics I

This course provides an introduction to three-dimensional design principles using the medium of clay. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of forming, surface design, glaze application, and firing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in slab and coil construction, simple wheel forms, glaze technique, and creative expression.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate glaze application, decorative methods and firing methods.
  2. Utilize the elements and principles of design in the development of ceramic forms.
  3. Create ceramics using tools and hand-building techniques of the coil and slab methods.
  4. Demonstrate planning a project in multi-step system while maintaining the integrity of the work area.
  5. Practice safe and economical work habits that contribute to the maintenance of a clean, organized studio.
