AST 151 General Astronomy I

This course introduces the science of modern astronomy with a concentration on the solar system. Emphasis is placed on the history and physics of astronomy and an introduction to the solar system, including the planets, comets, and meteors. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a general understanding of the solar system.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Natural Science. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course.

Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

Apply the processes by which scientific conclusions are drawn.
Communicate astronomical principles, processes, data, and conclusions in writing.
Analyze real and apparent motions and phenomena of the Sun, Earth, Moon, stars, and planets.
Apply laws of Kepler and Newton in solar system situations.
Apply principles of light to analyze astronomical situations.
Distinguish various solar system objects in terms of the origins and characteristics.
Apply geologic and atmospheric principles in a variety of solar system contexts.
