BIO 111 General Biology I Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course introduces the principles and concepts of biology. Emphasis is placed on basic biological chemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism and energy transformation, genetics, evolution, classification, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels. A recent high school or college chemistry class or CHM 092 is advised.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Natural Science. Student will not receive credit for both BIO 110 and BIO 111. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course.
Pre-requisite(s): DRE 098 or ENG 002 (P2 grade) Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Course has transfer restrictions - 20 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Differentiate among the structures and functions of biological macromolecules present in living organisms.
- Analyze cell composition and function.
- Apply the cell concept to living organisms.
- Apply the fundamental concepts of energy to metabolic processes.
- Diagram the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
- Diagram mitosis and meiosis.
- Contrast the stages and outcomes of these processes.
- Analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the processes of genetic inheritance.
- Evaluate the outcomes of Mendelian, sex-linked, and autosomally-linked inheritance.
- Interpret that DNA structure as it relates to the genetic code.
- Evaluate DNA structure as it impacts DNA replication, protein synthesis, mutation, and gene regulation.
- Utilize the modern system of classification as it applies to organisms.
- Distinguish evolution from Darwinian natural selection.
- Assess how natural selection drives the evolution of organisms.
- Distinguish among the mechanisms that lead to the formation of new species.
- Assess the impact of biotechnology on society.
- Apply basic laboratory skills utilized in biological techniques and research.
