BIO 250 Genetics

Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course covers principles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell genetics. Emphasis is placed on the molecular basis of heredity, chromosome structure, patterns of Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, evolution, and biotechnological applications. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize and describe genetic phenomena and demonstrate knowledge of important genetic principles.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): BIO 112 .
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Course has transfer restrictions - 20 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Illustrate how DNA’s structure relates to the genetic code.
  2. Evaluate DNA structure as it impacts DNA replication, protein synthesis, mutation, and gene regulation.
  3. Analyze how the concept of a gene impacts both gene expression and regulation in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
  4. Interpret mutation, DNA repair mechanisms, recombination, and transposition.
  5. Analyze qualitatively and quantitatively, traditional Mendelian inheritance with more complex non-Mendelian inheritance patterns.
  6. Illustrate the structural aspects of the genome, especially as arranged in eukaryotic chromosomes.
  7. Compare the different areas of biology directly involved in the study of genetics: Medical, Developmental, Populational,Quantitative, and Evolutionary.
  8. Contrast a variety of genetic model systems.
